In January 2016 heavy rain and record storms thrashed Sydney and New South Wales, bringing down trees and damaging roofs. The month was rated by the Bureau of Meteorology as the wettest start to a year since 1988, recording 249.8 mm of rain for Sydney.
It was during five key days when the rain fell and the wind blew most, with Joe and Romona Boniciolli becoming one of many storm victims. On one of these days – 14 January – a tree fell on their roof and car, creating severe damage to their house, writing off the car and damaging the house next door.
Joe, a retired builder, said the State Emergency Services were excellent and quickly removed the tree with their insurance company providing a ‘make safe’ cover to temporarily protect the house until the insurance settlement could be made.
“This ‘make safe’ fix consisted of a piece of black plastic weighed down by house bricks and roof tiles but two days later when it rained heavily again, the plastic filled with water, leaked into the roof cavity and pulled down the lounge and dining room ceilings. In fact the whole house had water damage. It was a disaster! Now we had more of a problem than we had before! I was not happy at all,” he said.
A furious Joe called his insurance company contractor, who had put up the original plastic cover, to tell him about his dilemma – he needed his roof covered properly, and fast, in case more rain and more damage was on its way.
The contractor then contacted Matt Lennox of Stormseal to help as they had heard of Matt and his new product so felt it was time to give it a try.
Joe said that as soon as Matt and his team arrived the roof was sealed and covered in a couple of hours.
