In December 2018, a devastating hailstorm damaged 33,000 properties in northern Sydney. Berowra was one of the worst-hit suburbs.<\/h3>\n

\"AmazingFor Ryan Johnson<\/a>, the happy arrival of his second child was sadly offset by the damage to his Berowra home. \u2018We had water pouring from every downlight.\u2019<\/p>\n

Nearby, Sally Edwards<\/a> was home alone. \u2018It was a terrifying experience. Our roof was shattered.\u2019<\/p>\n

Every room in David Dobson<\/a>\u2019s house was impacted. \u2018Nearly all our solar panels were smashed… water was pouring through.\u2019<\/p>\n

Todd Chapman<\/a> was on a European holiday. \u2018Our neighbour was up on our roof until 3am putting on tarpaulins.\u2019<\/p>\n

97% of Berowra homes damaged by the hailstorm were \u2018made safe\u2019 by insurers\u2019 builders with tarpaulins. While residents waited for their insurance claims to be processed, they found that life under tarps is far from safe.<\/h5>\n

\"Insurer\u2018My tarps flew off several times as more bad weather followed,\u2019 said David. Ryan was also kept awake by flapping tarps and falling sandbags. In the month after the storm, he climbed onto his roof five times to reattach them \u2013 and nearly slipped off. Sally\u2019s tarps were replaced eight times in five weeks. Meanwhile, rain leaked in and wrecked her carpets, curtains, blinds, ceiling fans and lights. Todd\u2019s tarps came off seven times in three months, causing ongoing damage and frustration.<\/p>\n

Elderly Berowra resident Marg<\/a> suffered terrible anxiety when the tarp on her roof blew upside-down and caught on powerlines. It was reattached seven times in five weeks.<\/p>\n

The initial storm damage bill was $75 million. As well as causing residents stress and sleep deprivation, repeated tarp failures caused additional property damage that pushed insurance claims to $1 billion.<\/h5>\n

David was lucky: his insurer installed Stormseal before the New Year. Sally\u2019s neighbours told her about superior Stormseal so she called her insurer to request it and advised Marg to do the same. Ryan also heard about it on the grapevine. Todd discovered Stormseal on the Berowra community Facebook page.<\/p>\n

When Stormseal was installed on their roofs in place of tarps, Berowra residents were hugely relieved.<\/h5>\n

\"Sally\u2018You\u2019ve got peace of mind that if it rains, no water is going to come in,\u2019 said Ryan.<\/p>\n

Even in high winds, Stormseal didn\u2019t budge. \u2018It\u2019s properly waterproof,\u2019 said Sally.<\/p>\n

\u2018Tarps and Stormseal are chalk and cheese!\u2019 David said.<\/p>\n

\u2018I want to say thank you very much to the inventor of Stormseal,\u2019 said Marg. \u2018And I hope the people who get hit by the next storm get Stormseal instead of tarps.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018It was also in the best interest of the insurers,\u2019 added Todd.<\/p>\n
